I’m living proof that small choices can create big changes.

art

I have something really exciting to share with you. I found out this week that my painting, She Looks Ahead, was just accepted into an art gallery exhibition called Turn the Page.

This painting took me a few months to complete and I shared the experience of it unfolding one stroke at a time on Instagram and Facebook. And I have to tell you…This accomplishment feels really personal and BIG.

Not just because this is the first piece of my art that has ever been accepted into a gallery. But because of what this painting represents. I painted She Looks Ahead during a time when I was literally turning the page in my own life.

I was closing my wellness studio. I was changing the way I worked with myself and other people, and I decided I wanted to spend more time at home with my husband and my animals. I remember feeling a little scared and lost as I painted. This painting felt different though. It wasn't like the others I made. It began to take shape and started representing where I was emotionally. While I was painting this piece, I was asking myself some pretty big questions about what I wanted the next chapter of my life to look and feel like.

I didn’t have all the answers, very few in fact, but I knew one thing. I had this strong desire in the pit of my stomach that kept nudging me to move into a new direction.

I knew I wanted to live slower. More intentional. Produce less so I could have more time for creativity. I wanted to feel more joy and have more time doing the things that actually filled my cup up instead of doing things that left me feeling drained.

So I started making different choices.

Small choices.

And then another one.

And another one.

And another one.

What kicked this mindset shift off for me was reading the book Atomic Habits back in the early Spring. It's a #1 Best Seller and I couldn't believe I was just hearing of it now, but as they say, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear, right?

I made the decision that I was going to follow what this book taught and one of the main themes it talks about is, our lives don’t usually change because of one giant decision. They change because of the little things we choose to do over and over again.

There is also a quote from Wayne Dyer that keeps coming back to me:

ā€œYou’re only one choice away from a new life.ā€

I really believe that and feel like I am living proof of this in so many ways. Not because one choice magically changes everything. But because one choice can change your direction. And then you make another choice. And another. Until one day you look around and realize…

Wow. I’m actually living differently.

That is what has been happening for me this year. And now, this painting that came out of one of my biggest life transitions is going to be hanging in one of our local art galleries!! I wasn't imaginging this outcome when I was creating it. I was just in creative flow, in present moment awareness and enjoying the process of making it. As I reflect on how this happened, I can look back now and see how all those small choices brought me here.

And if you want to celebrate this particular page I’m turning in my life, I would absolutely LOVE to see you at the gallery reception.

And maybe, while you’re standing there looking at She Looks Ahead, you can ask yourself:

What would happen if I started looking ahead, too?

Because your next chapter might be closer than you think.

One choice. One habit. One page at a time.

Sending lots of love and inspiration your way,

April
